エール大学の免疫学部門のIwasaki Akiko博士らが、何故に日本人におけるCOVID19の感染者や死亡者が少ないかについて、EMBO Molecular Medicine,10 April 2020で論述しています。
わが国では諸外国に比べて、PCR検査が十分に実施されていないことが問題となっていますが、わが国の低死亡者数は、検査の不備だけでは説明できないとしています。以下の5つの要因が関与しているのではと推論しています。
1) Japanese culture is inherently suited for social distancing, and face mask use prevents viral spread.
2) Japanese people were exposed to a milder version of SARS-CoV2 that conferred herd immunity before the spread of a more virulent strain of CoV2.
3) Japanese people have reduced susceptibility due to ACE2 receptor expression.
4) Japanese people have distinct HLA that confers immune resistance to CoV2.
5) BCG vaccine used in Japan confer protection against COVID19.
